NLCPD Begins Sharon’s Bay Park Renovations

The New Lenox Community Park District (NLCPD) is thrilled to start renovations on Sharon’s Bay Park, made possible by a 2024 Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant. The grant will allow the Park District to transform the park into a vibrant community hub.

To begin the renovations, Kids Around the World began to remove the playground equipment on Tuesday, July 1. The organization refurbishes existing playground equipment and then installs playgrounds in underdeveloped countries. The NLCPD is excited about not only providing an innovative recreational space for New Lenox residents but also empowering those in need through play. The old equipment from Sharon’s Bay may offer the children of countries such as Haiti, Ecuador or Ghana the opportunity to experience the simple joy of playing at a park with their friends.

“We are incredibly excited to collaborate with Kids Around the World,” said Ken Stephens, Director of Parks-Maintenance for the NLCPD. “It’s amazing how we’re able to give back to kids far beyond our own backyard in this way. This project will offer both the New Lenox community and an underdeveloped community new and exciting ways to enjoy parks and recreation.”

With the playground removal, the Park District can start the construction of new amenities. Renovations will feature a high school regulation basketball court, innovative “Tween Central Social Hub,” three modern play zones and council ring with a rain garden.
